SWC Reads: Neanderthal Seeks Human
I’m a sucker for a good romance, as anyone who has ever looked through my Kindle library can attest to. And, when a friend recently asked for a recommendation, Penny Reid was the first person I thought of.
I’ve read everything Penny Reid has published at this point and have laughed and cried my way through them all. Each of her books is connected to the rest, however loosely, and Neanderthal Seeks Human is the one that starts them all. All of her stories are deeply heartfelt and deal with larger issues than simply girl likes boy, boy likes girl, for which I cannot express how much I appreciate. I like my characters to have depth! I long for complex emotions and conversations that pass the Bechdel Test! But I also want something that’s gonna be all warm and fuzzy and leave me feeling good inside and believing in the power of true love. Penny Reid is a champion in that regard.
Neanderthal Seeks Human centers around Janie Morris, a mathematically inclined, trivia spouting, giant who attends a weekly knitting group despite the fact that she does not in fact know how to knit. After the day from hell in which she kicks her cheating boyfriend to the curb only to realize she’s now homeless and out of a her job (this is not a spoiler, I promise, it all happens in the first few pages), she’s escorted from the building by the most beautiful man she’s ever seen. And this is where our story truly begins.
With the help of her eclectic, and endlessly endearing group of girlfriends, and one smoking hot security guard, Janie comes to find that life is an endless parade of surprises where everything she’s never realized she wanted is hiding just around the next corner.
So give this delightful book a read and tell me what you think! I’d love to hear your thoughts!
