SWC Reads Special Edition: The Best Travel Memiors
It should come as no surprise that the number of memoirs I own is staggering. The number of travel specific memoirs is also substantial. And so, while I’m at home and the travel bug bites but the next trip is still a ways off I thought I’d round up some of my favorites for us all to enjoy.
What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding by Kristin Newman
The book I have gifted to so many friends who are about to hop on a long plane ride. The uproariously funny, sexy, and thoughtful memoir from the screenwriter who brought us That 70s Show and How I Met Your Mother is a must read.
Love With A Chance of Drowning by Torre DeRoche
As idyllic as a weekend spent on a sailing yacht sounds the intense journey DeRoche and her handsome boyfriend take on as they said across the Pacific Ocean is one I’m glad I can read about without ever experiencing for myself.
Only in Spain by Nellie Bennet
An Australian shop girl who’s love of Flamenco takes her to Spain and the version of herself she discovers while she’s there is a wonderful read for anyone who dreams of ditching their job to follow their dream, no matter where it takes them.
All Over the Place by Geraldine DeRuiter
The travel guide for people who are more interested in falling further in love with their spouse than they are in knowing exactly where they are, written by a fellow Seattleite with a wicked sense of humor you can’t help but laugh along with her as she gets lost all over the place.
My Year in Provence by Peter Mayle
A true classic, and one of the most charming storytellers, in my opinion, at least. You can’t help but fall in love with Southern France as Mayle tells you about getting the hang of expat life. Be warned, his writing always makes me hungry and desire a crisp glass of rose!
My Life in France by Julia Child
The queen of French cuisine tells all from first moving to France with the US Foreign Service and taking her first cooking class to what it was like when she was making her tv show decades later. While I will admit this one is slightly less travel than it is memior I still love it and it always makes me want to pack a bag and hop on the next flight to Paris.
Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
This is one of those books that took me forever to read because I could just never get into it but once I finally did read it I so loved her story, traveling though Italy, India, and Indonesia as she reinvented herself along the way, discovering new versions of herself the more she travelled.
Where do you wish you were traveling to?

Kate
